All about the details:  Choosing the perfect interior trim color

Most homeowners are surprised when asked to choose a paint color for their trim, not realizing how the trim color can greatly change a room.  Trim paint for your door moldings. window moldings, ceiling molding, baseboard molding, doors and built-ins is a very important part of the selections process as these items take up a significant amount of space within a room.

White is the most common and obvious paint choice because it easily ties everything together.  Most homeowners will use the same shade of white for the ceiling as they use for the trim with just the sheen of the paints setting the two apart.  Most designers have one or two “go-to” whites they will use regularly; knowing how each looks in different lights and how each will subtly impact the wall color.  A bright white like Sherwin Williams Super White SW6995 will offer a great contrast between any wall color and the trim, keeping the room crisp and bright.  A softer white like Sherwin Williams Alabaster SW7008 will pull warm undertones out of the room and be a more subtle contrast, creating a smoother feel.

Neutral painted trim is a great designer nod to what is a more traditional style.  If painting all your trim something other than white seems too traditional for you, painting just your doors a neutral color is a great transitional way to introduce a traditional feel in a contemporary home.

A warm gray on your doors with white door trim is a great option for those wanting to draw some attention to the doors without over-powering other elements in a room.

A tried and true black like Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black SW6258 on doors can grab the attention in a room and is a true neutral, which means it will still work with any wall color, and is a timeless option that will never go out of style.

Bold color is a fun, trendy way to highlight trim or a single door.  Using a bold trim color on a single door like a pantry door or barn door is less risky than painting a whole house in a trendy color, which may feel dated quickly.  Many homeowners will choose a bold accent color they intend on picking up in their furniture and décor to tie a beautiful door into the room.  Varying shades of teal and sea glass are hugely popular on the East Coast and are often used as a fun door paint.

Paying attention to these kind of small details and relying on a trained designer for help will ensure your home selections tie together flawlessly.
