5 Grilling Tips For The Perfect Cookout

Summertime is here and that means a lot more outdoor time, entertaining and of course grilling and cookouts! We've got 5 great and easy grilling tips for you from our Closing Coordinator (and Grill Master extraordinaire) Adam Thompson! Learn more about Adam through our Employee Spotlight!

Tip #1. Avoid Lighter Fluid.

If you don’t like your food tasting like petroleum, there are many other ways to light your coals. Charcoal chimneys or paraffin lighter cubes are a safe and easy alternative for your charcoal grilling to help save the flavor of your food!

Tip #2. Keep an eye on the temperature!

Meat thermometers can be your best friend in making you the ultimate grill hero for your guests. No one wants over cooked dry chicken, or even worse, under cooked. 

Tip #3. Know when to use direct heat vs. indirect heat. 

Direct heat should generally be used on smaller cuts of meat that are cooked in 30 minutes or less. Use indirect heat for larger and tougher cuts. Gas grills make indirect cooking very easy by simply turning off one side of your grill. In charcoal grills, you can purchase charcoal baskets that keep the coals to one side. 

PRO TIP: Adam says, "I’ve also placed a couple of bricks on the side where the meat will cook and dumped the coals on the opposite side."

Tip #4. Keep a spray bottle of water handy.

Safety first! Keep an eye on the grill and always have a spray bottle of water to calm any flare ups on the grill!

Tip #5.  Keep the grates clean. 

Last night’s or even last week’s (oh no!) grilled fish skin left on the grill can impart a fishy char flavor to whatever you are grilling today. Make sure you clean the grates after each use to make sure to keep it in the best shape, and maintain the flavor integrity of future meals!
